Countdown to January
The next class start date is January 2nd. This is a night class that meets from 6:00PM to 11:00PM Monday-Friday. There is still time to register! Those interested in STUDENT HOUSING should contact Karla at (407) 224-3283 for information.

Project URobot
Towards the end of the Compositing Block, the students are presented with ‘Project URobot’. Each student must model, texture and rig their assigned robot to fit in the world of the movie I,Robot. They write a short script and direct a live action shoot on the Universal Studios backlot. Each student  tracks the footage and then directs an actor during a motion capture session using the school's Vicon optical motion capture system. With their lit and rendered robot, they seamlessly composite the CG elements into the live video plate. This assignment encompasses tasks you will face everyday in a visual effects studio.

Nick Boughen from Rainmaker
The DAVE School was fortunate to host Nick Boughen as a guest lecturer this past November. Nick is currently a CG Supervisor for Rainmaker Animation and Visual Effects in Vancouver, British Colombia, and is also the author of Lightwave 3D 8 Lighting.  Nick has worked on such shows as Stargate-SG1 and the films Good Boy!, Garfield and Garfield II.

The main focus of Nick’s week long lecture series was lighting for 3D scenes, though the topics of using Sasquatch for generating fur and the basics of muzzle replacement (such as talking dogs or cats) were also touched upon. “You can learn one process, but that won’t help you on your next show,” said Nick. “You need to learn how to think.” Nick’s lecture style involved the students a great deal, with Nick asking questions that led the students to come up with the answers on their own.

Block 1 Students create their 1st Character Model
The current Block 1 class has just completed their first organic character model. Each student was required to model the Anubis character basedon provided concept art. “We don’t just focus on making an interesting looking model”, said Instructor William Vaughan. “The students learn how to make a production ready model that will deform properly when animated.” After the base model was created the students had the option of customizing their character, which led to the creation of a Predator, Batman, Hip-Hop, Jack Sparrow and many other cool characters. “I was a bit surprised that the first organic model we were going to create was going to be a full blown character,” remarks Nick Stevens. “One week later and I had a character model that I couldn’t believe I made.” Be sure to check out some of the other cool projects the students have created in the Dave School Gallery.
